  • Skills Trees: What Are They And Why They Matter

A skills tree is part of the Skills Mapping and AI-powered learning path feature. This article outlines what a skills tree is, why they’re important, and how Udemy generates and leverages them to help organizations drive employee skill development.

    Please note:

    • Skills trees are currently generated through AI within the process to create an AI-powered learning path.
    • Skills trees are currently only generated in English and Japanese.
    • Skills Mapping and AI-powered learning paths are available to Enterprise Plan organizations at no additional cost.

    What is a skills tree?

A skills tree serves as a structured view of what learners should know and be able to do within a specific subject area. It organizes these skills in a hierarchical format with distinct levels, encompassing the following components:

    1. Domains: These are the overarching areas of expertise.
    2. Sub-domains: These represent more specialized areas of knowledge or expertise. Sub-domains branch out from the main domain.
    3. Skills: The ability to do something competently. Each sub-domain is made up of several skills.

At every level, these elements adhere to the principles of being mutually exclusive (ME) and collectively exhaustive (CE). This means they do not overlap (ME) and that every skill within the area fits neatly into one of these elements (CE).

    Why skills trees matter

In today’s skills-based economy, ensuring that employees possess the right skills is essential. Skills trees provide a clear roadmap for employee skill development, aligning with both the employees’ needs and the organization’s strategic goals. Additionally, we use skills trees as the foundation for creating AI-powered learning paths that are tailored to meet the specific skill needs of your employees and organization.  Learn more about Skills Mapping and AI-powered learning paths and how to create them.

    Skills tree example:

The following skills tree example is for the topic of Data Collection and Exploration. Note that each domain is organized by subdomains, and each subdomain includes several skills.

    How Udemy generates skills trees

Skills trees are generated using the power of artificial intelligence (AI). To create skills trees, Udemy first gathers information about your organization's and employees' skill needs through the skill definition step. Leveraging AI and our extensive Udemy catalog, these inputs are translated into a more specific set of skill requirements; constructing the final, hierarchical skills tree.

  • Skills Mapping and AI-Powered Learning Paths: Best Practices for Skills Tree Modifications

A skills tree is part of the Skills Mapping and AI-powered learning path feature. This article includes best practices for modifying skills trees to ensure your employees have the most effective learning experience as they develop their skills.

Best practices for skills tree modifications

Keep the following best practices in mind when editing your skills tree to ensure the most effective learning experience for your employees.

    1. Limit the number of domains and subdomains that you add to the skills tree.

    • This will help to ensure that the skills tree’s size remains focused and is not overly broad.

    2. Limit the number of skills that you add for each subdomain.

    • This will help ensure that the number of skills your employees are working on is manageable.

    3. When adding new skills:

    • Be specific about what the employees should be able to do by the end of the learning path.
    • Use action verbs, such as “analyze,” “synthesize,” “apply,” “evaluate,” and “create”.
      • Consider the depth levels from Bloom’s taxonomy when deciding on these action verbs. You can find extensive resources online regarding Bloom's taxonomy.
    • Make sure that all skills are aligned with your learners’ and organization’s goals.

    4. Keep your audience in mind as you make edits to your skills tree.

    • Consider the role(s), prior experience, and skill needs of the learning path audience.

    5. Be intentional about your wording of domains, sub-domains, and skills. Learn more about these terms in our Help Center article about skills trees and why they matter.

    • Keep in mind that Udemy’s search algorithms will map relevant Udemy content to each term that is included in the skills tree when generating your learning path.
    • Skill examples:
      • Poor-quality skill example: Learn about the skills, behaviors, and impact (SBI) framework, Introduction to “X.”
        • This skill is not specific or observable. In this case, the generated learning path will include content about the term “learn” in addition to “SBI framework.”
      • High-quality skill example:
        • Use the SBI framework to give feedback to employees during performance reviews.

    6. Limit editing of domain and subdomain language within the skills tree as much as possible. The domains and subdomains generated follow a specific format intended to lead to more targeted search results.

    • A best practice is to modify section titles when your learning path is generated. Section titles align to the domains of the skills tree.
