What is the Udemy AI Assistant?
The Udemy AI Assistant is a virtual learning companion that guides learners on every step of their skills development journey. We know that blocked learning slows progress and is frustrating and costly. With the new AI Assistant, learners will have access to the knowledge of Udemy Business instructors at their fingertips. Through a personalized conversation, the Assistant will answer learning-related questions and recommend highly relevant course content in real-time, ultimately unblocking the learning process to help organizations reach critical outcomes faster than ever before. To do this, the AI Assistant uses its knowledge of Udemy instructor content to recommend courses, summarize content, explain complex concepts, and more.
Unlike traditional search functionality, the AI Assistant uses a large language model (LLM) with the ability to understand natural dialogue and perform a wide range of tasks, like answering questions and summarizing content. Learners are able to have a conversation with the AI Assistant and thus provide more inputs to get much more targeted results than they would get with a simple search.
Is the AI Assistant available in all Udemy Business courses?
The AI Assistant is available in all English language Udemy Business courses offered by instructors participating in our GenAI program.
How does the AI Assistant determine which course to recommend when there are multiple similar courses on a topic?
The AI Assistant recommends courses by taking various factors into account, including the learner’s stated skill need, keywords, ratings, etc.
We have internal teams dedicated to monitoring the impact of the changes we make to our discovery systems and continuously optimizing them to ensure a balanced approach that prioritizes both relevance and variety in course recommendations.
How does the AI Assistant integrate with our LMS?
For customers using an LMS, the AI Assistant is available to answer questions while learners are taking a course. However, to get course recommendations, learners need to be logged into the Udemy Business website.
Does the AI Assistant suggest courses outside of the Udemy Business catalog?
No, the AI Assistant only recommends courses that are available to your organization through your Udemy plan.
Can the AI Assistant be accessed on multiple devices?
The AI Assistant is available on both web and mobile devices.
Are there any limitations to the number of users or the amount of data the AI Assistant can handle?
There are currently no limitations on the number of users that can access the AI Assistant; however, access to the tool may not remain free in the future. Considering the costs associated with commercial AI services, we are evaluating different pricing options and will inform you if any costs become associated with using this tool.
Do customers have their own instance of the AI Assistant and underlying model?
Currently, customers do not have their own instance of the AI Assistant. However, we do not use customer data in any way that could result in customer data being disclosed to an unauthorized third party.
Can customers train the underlying AI model?
No, our GenAI features use a combination of proprietary Udemy content and intrinsic information from the GenAI model to meet user needs. We currently do not provide the ability for customers to train or fine-tune the underlying AI model.
Will customer input, output, or personal data be used to train or fine-tune the GenAI models used to power the AI Assistant?
No, Udemy will not use customer input, output, or personal data to improve the GenAI features in any way that could result in that data being disclosed to any third party, including to train or fine-tune any GenAI models used for the GenAI features, without the customer's prior consent.
What is the data retention for user prompts (i.e., user text inputs into the AI Assistant)?
Inputs are automatically deleted from our GenAI service provider, OpenAI, after 30 days. Inputs are retained in our systems as long as the organization account is active. The AI Assistant may reference conversations from the last 12 hours to provide more relevant responses and a more personalized experience.
Can the AI Assistant provide input to admins about employee learning consumption and interactions with the AI Assistant?
Not at this time. To get the most up-to-date information about what employees are learning, we encourage admins to continue using their insights and reporting dashboards.
What integration options are available with the AI Assistant?
At this time, the AI Assistant is only available on the Udemy Business platform.
How is the effectiveness of the AI Assistant measured?
The AI Assistant will launch initially as an A/B test. During this time, a percentage of your learners will have access to the AI Assistant and a percentage will not. By running this test, we’ll learn what impact the AI Assistant has on your learners and organization. Understanding these impacts is critical for making confident decisions that maintain a high-quality, beneficial learning experience for all Udemy customers.
Additionally, we have collected months of quantitative and qualitative data on the AI Assistant’s responses through a beta testing program. Through this program, we have made improvements to the AI Assistant based on customer feedback, and we will continue to do so throughout the lifetime of the product.
Can learners and admins opt in and out of using the feature?
To enable the feature, an account owner must agree to the Udemy Business GenAI Additional Terms by accepting the terms. Without this agreement, the GenAI features will remain inactive. Once the terms are accepted the GenAI features will be activated. Admins and owners will have the option to disable it at any time, which will turn it off for all users of that organization.
