Our mission is to provide Udemy Business customers and learners with access to the freshest, highest quality, and most relevant content from the Udemy.com marketplace. This article explains the content curation process for the Udemy Business collection and our commitment to content quality.
Learners on Udemy Business can have slightly different objectives than learners on Udemy.com. Our audience is made of professionals learning workplace-relevant skills in a business setting. Their corporations sponsor online education and develop robust learning programs across a wide variety of topics and industries. Thus, our audience can have different expectations and standards for what constitutes an appropriate course, due to the nature of their learning environment.
How we curate
We take a data-driven and human-curated approach to deliver high quality courses on the topics and skills professionals need to do whatever comes next. In-demand skills are surfaced through the data of tens of millions of learners who use our platform.
Curation is nuanced - we look at the combination of many quality signals to determine whether a course is appropriate for our business audience.
Curation criteria to be eligible for Udemy Business:
- Our minimum rating and number of reviews vary by language. For English, we require a 4.4+ rating and 25+ learner reviews for inclusion (the more, the better, because it means the rating is more stable and accurate). We adapt these criteria for international collections based on user behavior data.
- Topic relevance to our business users and current offering in the collection on that topic.
- Instructor’s average rating and standing with Udemy policies - we want to see responsive instructors with high engagement with learners and learner feedback.
- Instructor’s agreement to our Udemy Business Marketing program and course eligibility.
We require minimum course ratings and number of reviews for inclusion in the collection. Once a course is curated into the collection, the rating may fluctuate over time.
We continuously monitor the content collection for course quality and relevance. If a course’s rating drops below 4.0 for an extended period of time, we add it to our retirement list. Removing less engaging or outdated content is just as important as adding new high quality courses to ensure our collection is as relevant as possible for our learners.
Instructors
Our instructors are dedicated, subject matter experts. They are incentivized to keep their courses engaging and up-to-date, especially in fast-moving tech topics. We empower them with user data and dashboards to drill into what’s working for their learners and what isn’t, so they can be agile and responsive.
By providing an easy-to-use platform, we have leveled the playing field for anyone who is knowledgeable and passionate about their topic/industry to teach. Because of this, we are enabling all learners of different backgrounds and learning preferences to find an instructor whose expertise, identity, and teaching style resonates best with them - leading to a more effective learning experience.
Commitment to content quality
Course transcription review
We ensure our collection is of the highest quality possible in multiple ways. In addition to our strict curation criteria, Udemy harnesses artificial intelligence (AI) to review course transcripts from the Udemy Business collection to gain maximum visibility into our collection and to proactively ensure our content is fit for a professional audience.
On the rare occasion that inappropriate or inaccurate content is found in Udemy Business, we follow a swift escalation workflow and reach out to the instructor to revise the specific lecture. Almost always, the instructor is receptive and grateful for the opportunity to remedy. If they aren’t, we remove the course from Udemy Business.
Reporting inappropriate content
If you believe you’ve uncovered inappropriate content in a Udemy Business course, please contact our support team so we can assist. We take content quality very seriously and will address any concerns as quickly as possible.
