It will be turned on for Udemy Business customers that have GenAI enabled on May 27, 2025. Account owners can turn this feature off before then within their GenAI settings.

What is Role Play?
Role Play is a curriculum item that allows learners to practice their soft skills by interacting with an AI character in realistic scenarios. As noted, these exercises give learners the opportunity to apply what they're learning in courses through hands-on practice, allowing them to build confidence and develop real-world skills like decision-making, problem-solving, and communication. Through AI-enabled conversation coaching and simulations, learners can practice their skills within consequence-free environments before taking them into the real world.
Use cases for Role Play include any workplace situation where two people are interacting live, like giving feedback, negotiating, having a customer call, and everything in between.
Who can create a Role Play?
All Udemy instructors who are included in the Instructor GenAI Program, and custom course creators in Udemy Business organizations who have GenAI and the Role Play feature enabled. Account owners can enable GenAI in their account settings.
Where are Role Plays located?
Role Plays will be integrated directly into courses. They are designed to align with course content and enhance the learning experience within the course structure. The curriculum item is labeled as “Role Play” within the course content navigation.
What languages are Role Plays available in?
English with additional languages to follow.

Udemy Business customers who have GenAI enabled for their organization.
How does Role Play ensure the privacy and security of my data?
We have established responsible AI principles, which describe our commitment to responsibly developing and deploying AI technologies, including the protection of customer personal data from unauthorized disclosure. We do not use customer personal data, input, or output to train or fine-tune GenAI models used for our GenAI features. Our policy also prohibits vendors from training AI models using learner, instructor, and Udemy Business organization data.
What sub-processors does Role Play use?
- OpenAI for speech-to-text processing.
- ElevenLabs for text-to-speech processing.
Will there be a limit to the number of Role Plays per course?
No, there will not be a limit to Role Play per course. We do, however, encourage instructors to insert Role Play where it makes the most sense for the learners to practice and achieve their learning goals.
Will Role Play be available on mobile? Or will it be desktop only?
For learners, Role Play will be available in both desktop and mobile web. The functionality for instructors and course creators to add Role Plays to courses and manage them is only available in desktop.
Is there a limit on how many times a learner can complete a Role Play or how long they can interact with a Role Play?
No. There are no limitations to how many times a learner can take a Role Play.
Can org instructors/creators add role plays to custom courses?
Yes. Organizations can start creating their own Role Plays on May 27th.
