What is a Watch Streak? How does it work?
A Watch Streak is a feature that encourages learners to watch 30 minutes of course videos each week. The Watch Streaks feature appears as an open ring when a learner logs into their Udemy account. The ring updates as they progress through watching video minutes each week. Once they have watched 30 minutes of video, the ring closes and they have completed their Watch Streak for the week!
The number of weeks that a learner maintains their Watch Streaks also appears. For example, if a learner has earned a streak for three weeks in a row, they will see that number represented within the streak as well.
Where are Watch Streaks being surfaced?
Watch Streaks are surfaced within the Udemy Business web and native app experience.
Can’t see the Watch Streak feature in the Udemy Business native app?
Make sure you have updated the app to the latest version from the Play Store or App Store.
Why did you launch Watch Streaks?
At Udemy, we are always looking for ways to help individuals and organizations learn new skills that will help them reach desired outcomes faster. Initially, we tested Watch Streaks to see if they increase weekly engagement within the platform. Including Watch Streaks has shown to significantly increase learner engagement across all of the organizations that we work with.
How often does lecture watching data update?
Currently, lecture watching data updates 3 times per day, so learners will not see their ring closing simultaneously as they learn. This is something we are working toward for future iterations.
Are there associated emails that will go to learners?
Not yet. We are currently experimenting with Watch Streak emails that will encourage learners to log into Udemy to complete their 30 minute streak. If the results of this experiment are positive, we will launch them to accompany the in-product experience of Watch Streaks.
Can admins switch it off?
We are encouraging all customers to keep the Watch Streak feature turned on at this time, as we have seen very positive learner engagement results across global organizations through the experiments we’ve run.
If you would still like to disable the Streaks feature, your Customer Success Manager can do that for you.
Feedback is always welcome! So if you have any that you’d like to provide to help us improve the feature, please contact your Customer Success Manager.
Can admins set a time limit for the Watch Streaks?
For now, all Watch Streaks will have a time limit of 30 minutes. The 30-minute time limit has been chosen carefully to accommodate active and passive learners and encourage each of them to learn for an attainable yet significant amount of time in a given week.
